In reality, this question matters more than you would think.  If your pregnancy is not viable there is no reason to take the abortion pill. There is no reason to spend money on medication that is not needed.

What does viable mean? Viable means that the pregnancy is progressing. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. 80% of those happen within the first trimester. According to the Mayo Clinic, a miscarriage occurs when the pregnancy does not develop properly.

The placement of the pregnancy also determines viability. If the pregnancy is implanted outside of the uterus (ectopic pregnancy), it is not a viable pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy requires medical intervention. The abortion pill will not remove an ectopic pregnancy.

Is the pill safe for me?

Certain factors can put you at potential risk when taking the abortion pill. According to the Medication Guide for Mifepristone, you should NOT take medication abortion if…

• Are using an IUD.
• Have problems with your adrenal glands (chronic adrenal failure).
• Take a medicine to thin your blood.
• Have a bleeding problem.
• Have porphyria.
• Take certain steroid medicines.
• Are allergic to mifepristone, misoprostol, or medicines that contain misoprostol, such as Cytotec or Arthrotec.

The Mayo Clinic suggests you should not take the abortion pill if you can’t reach a healthcare professional by phone or online, or don’t have access to emergency care.

Do not take any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines (including herbal medicines or supplements) at any time during the treatment period without first asking your healthcare provider about them because they may interfere with the treatment.

Are abortion pills online safe?

The FDA recommends not purchasing the abortion pill over the Internet. Other countries do not have the same safety standards as the United States. This means that the safety, effectiveness, and quality cannot be ensured.
